Dr. Radhakrishnan on Education

The teacher is the cornerstone of the arch of education. Success of the educational process depends considerably on the teacher, for it is the teacher who has to implement aims and build the character of the students. Radhakrishnan says that at bottom, the quality of a university is always in direct proportion to the quality of its teachers. A good teacher is one who knows his subject, is enthusiastic about it and one who never ceases to learn. He said, “A good teacher has a sense of commitment to his work, derives satisfaction from it and is not prompted to do things for fame or power. Above all, he is a man who loves his students.” The good teacher is one who is objective, just humble and is open to correction. He is aware that in real life, teachers are not paragons of virtue or models of intellectual efficiency, so he cautions that students should imitate only the blameless acts of their mentors.
