The statutory body All India Council for Technical Education was established for proper planning & co-ordinated development of technical education system through out the country.

AICTE monitors qualitative growth of technical education in relation to planned quantitative growth and proper maintenance of norms and Standards. Technical education broadly covers Programmes of education, research & training in Engineering & Technology in the field of Architecture, Town planning, Management, Pharmacy & Applied arts & Crafts and other such Programmes, the central government may notify in the official gazette.

Established in 1948, the University has since become one of the leading centres for research and teaching in the country. The 414 acre campus is located in the North Western part of Pune.

The jurisdiction of the University extends to Pune, Ahmednagar and Nashik Districts. In 1994-95, the University had 41 postgraduate departments, 209 affiliated colleges and 118 recognized research institutions, with an enrollment of 1,70,000 students for both the undergraduate and postgraduate courses in different faculties

The MSBTE lays down policies for technical education system. It also conducts research development and training for curriculum design, implementation and evaluation.

The board also sets standards for curriculum, infrastructure and other resources, conduct examinations, declares results and award Certificates on behalf of the Government of Maharashtra. The board also grants affiliation to institutes; equivalence and accreditation to courses in autonomous institutions.
